Bears Pictures Hunting - Diet

Many people think that bears are exclusively meat eaters. However, plant foods make up the bulk of the bears' diet. Bears consume ripening fruits, berries, and nuts, particularly during the fall months when bears are busy storing their fat for winter. Bears eat carrion, insects, and occasional small prey, such as deer fawns.

During the periods when temperatures drop and food becomes scarce, bears retire to their dens for an extended period of sleep. If food is plentiful year- round, some southern bears may not hibernate at all.

Bears Pictures Hunting - Reproduction

Female black bears become sexually mature when they are large enough (about 100 pounds). If they eat more nutritious food, they reach that size faster. Female bears will usually mate every other year and produce one to three cubs. Mating season occurs in May and June.

As a rule, the younger males lose out to the bigger and more aggressive older males. If a female bear gets pregnant, the egg won't begin rapid development until late fall or early winter when she enters her den. The egg will develop only if the bear has enough fat reserves to survive through the winter.

The newborn cubs are helpless. Their eyes are closed. They have a thin fur and snuggle close against their mother's belly to get warm and drink plenty of her milk. They soon grow into strong independent bears.
