Brown Bear Picture

Ancient Brown Bear picture galleries can be found drawn and carved on the cave walls where our ancestors lived. In ancient times, this species was not numerous, as larger and stronger Short-Faced or Bulldog Bears in America and Cave Bears in Eurasia inhabited the same territory and competed with other bears for food. Short-Faced bears were fierce carnivores; about twice larger than present-day Grizzlies, but Cave Bears were omnivores, like Brown Bears. When large carnivores became extinct, Brown Bears became the second largest mammals after Polar Bears in North America and in Europe. This species survived, because it is more adapted to a variety of food than larger carnivorous bears that have a limited range of food and could not live on plants, insects and carrion when large herbivores became extinct in the ice age. The reasons for the Cave Bear extinction are not known.

Nowadays, Brown Bears are associated only with Russia and North America. Brown Bears have not changed much since the recent ice age. Brown Bear picture galleries that date back to about 10,000 years ago feature large humped animals with strong paws, plantigrade feet, and dense brown coat. Contrary to the species’ name, Brown Bears may also come in blonde, black, cream, cinnamon, and in a combination of these colors.

In a Brown Bear picture, you can see very different animals, because there are three genetically distinct subspecies of the Brown Bear in North America: the Grizzly of Alaska and Yukon, the Alberta-Saskatchewan line, and bears found further south in the Washington-Idaho-Montana-Wyoming area. Russian Brown Bears differ much from the American Grizzlies.

The population of the Brown Bear is estimated around 200,000 animals. The Russian population comprises around 120,000 Brown Bears; about 40,000 individuals lives in the USA; in Canada there are about 20,000 Brown Bears. Around 10,000 Brown Bears form fragmented populations in some European countries. Since these animals prefer remote areas and avoid encounters with humans, they are very difficult to see in the wild. There are many websites and books where you can learn more about the species and see Brown Bear picture galleries.
