Grizzly Bear Picture

When looking for a Grizzly Bear picture, take into consideration that the Grizzly or the Silvertip bear is one of the subspecies of the Brown Bear that inhabits the western parts of North America. The scientific name of the Grizzly is Ursus arctos horribilis, while the Brown Bear is referred to as Ursus arctos. In size, coat color, and behavior, Grizzly Bears are similar to Siberian Brown Bears (Ursus arctos collaris.) The Grizzly is very strong and dangerous for humans. The weight of the Grizzly Bear varies between 180 and 700 kg, depending on the season and food availability. Sexual dimorphism is very strong in this species. It means that males are considerably larger than females.

The name of the subspecies becomes evident from the first sight at the Grizzly Bear picture. Dark coat of these bears has lighter tips, which creates a grizzled look. The coat color of the Grizzly in various areas differs from deep brown to red and even blonde. The characteristic feature of the Grizzly that makes it different from the Black Bear is a large hump over the shoulders. The hump is a muscle mass which makes the forelimbs of the Grizzly Bear very powerful. Longer claws and cranial profile are the other characteristics of the Grizzly.

There are about 60,000 Grizzly Bears in the world. It’s very difficult to see and take a Grizzly Bear picture in the wild. Though these animals inhabit a vast territory in western Canada and northwestern USA, they prefer keeping away from humans. Currently, Grizzlies enjoy legal protection in the USA and Canada, but habitat destruction and very low reproductive rate contribute to the decline of the population. These large and dangerous animals cannot be reintroduced to their former ranges currently used for agriculture.

Though Grizzly Bears are omnivores, able to consume a variety of plant matter, they are known to prey on deer, elk, moose, bison, and domestic livestock. When encountering with humans, Grizzlies are often aggressive and tend to attack. Females with cubs and all Grizzlies after winter hibernation are especially dangerous. When hiking in a bear country, take into consideration the possibility of encountering with a dangerous beast. Seeing Grizzly Bear picture galleries and reading about their habits can help survive in a bear country.
